Overview
A purely transmissive LCD relies entirely on its backlight to form the image, which means the brighter the sun gets, the harder that backlight has to work to stay visible – and even then, contrast tends to wash out. Transflective TFT displays take a different approach: the panel reflects ambient light to form part of the image alongside the backlight, so the display actually gets easier to read as outdoor light increases rather than fighting against it.
This category covers transflective panels typically used in handheld instruments, outdoor metering equipment, and portable devices that spend significant time in direct sunlight but also need to remain usable indoors or at dusk, when the backlight takes over more of the image formation.
